About

I'm a journalist who writes on politics, human rights, and environment in South Asia. For more than a decade, I have traveled across India, Sri Lanka and Nepal writing for Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, The Economic Times, Tehelka, the New York Times, The Caravan, The Hindu, Outlook Traveller, and news channel CNN-IBN.

I have a Masters in political journalism from Columbia University, New York. I've also studied in Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, and Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.

My first book, THE SEASONS OF TROUBLE, a nonfictional account of three people in postwar Sri Lanka was published in October 2014 from Verso Books in US and UK, and HarperCollins in India. It has won the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize 2015, and Tata Lit Live First Book Award for Non-Fiction 2015.

Among the other awards I have received are those from
Society of Authors, London, 2014;
Charles Wallace India Trust Writing Fellowship, 2013;
International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) Award for reporting on conflict, 2012;
Prabha Dutt-Sanskriti fellowship for journalism, 2012;
Mumbai Press Club Award for environmental reporting, 2011;
South Asian Journalists' Association Reporting Award, 2010.

I have lived in New Delhi, Chennai and New York, and am now based in Bangalore, in the south of India. I speak four South Asian languages: Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
